Blok: All Thought of Valor…

This poem speaks to the importance of the Russian poetic tradition: it is closely modeled on Pushkin’s famous poem “Я помню чудное мгновение” (I recall a wondrous moment...). In the context of Pushkin’s joyous poem, in which the beloved is regained through a miraculous repetition, the ending of Blok’s poem is profoundly dark. The poem symbolically interwines romantic and religious despair.

The лицо at the center of this poem is a wonderful example of the power of the “symbol” in Blok’s poetry. We assume that this “face” is the portrait of the speaker’s beloved, but it also “shines” like a religious icon. Note that the Virgin Mary typically appears in icons wearing a dark blue cloak. The ring “thrown into the night” is, presumably, an engagement or wedding ring (обручальное кольцо), symbol of a bond that should last eternally.

An analogion (Russian: аналой) is a stand in front of the “Tsar’s Gates” in an Orthodox Church (which lead to the altar), used for holding icons; it is also used in Orthodox wedding ceremonies (couples are led around it three times while wearing crowns and holding candles).

If we read the beloved’s portrait as a kind of religious icon, then the act of willfully “removing” it from one’s sight is an act of despair that borders on sacrilege or iconoclasm: this “window into eternity” has been shut, and all ideals renounced.

This translation preserves the meter and rhyme scheme of the original, and so deviates ever-so-slightly from the literal meaning in places.

All thought of valor, of great feats, of glory
I would upon this woeful earth resign,
When from the table standing there before me
Your face, within its simple frame, would shine.

But then the hour struck that saw us sundered;
I threw the sacred ring into the night.
Your fate you had surrendered to another;
Your face, so beautiful, I lost from sight.

Through days that swirled like cursèd swarms I faltered...
By wine, by passion ceaselessly pursued...
And I remembered you before the altar,
And called to you — called out, as to my youth...

I called to you: look back, though you were leaving;
I poured such tears, but you did not requite...
You wrapped your dark blue cloak about you, grieving,
And walked from home into the humid night.

I know not where you found a place of refuge —
My tender one, my dear one — for your pride...
I dream: In your blue cloak I’ve oft beheld you,
In which you walked into the humid night.

No more to dream of tenderness, of glory;
Now all is far behind me, youth has passed!
