Tyutchev: Two Poems on Russia

Here are two of the most well-know and oft-cited poems in the Russian canon concerning the nature of Russia and foreigners’ misconceptions (mis-perceptions) of it — their blindness to Russia’s peculiar beauty. Where Western Europeans, or even Westernizers within Russia, might look at Russian life and decry the lack of any demonstrable, objective, quantitative advantage, Tyutchev here asserts a mysterious, subjective, qualitative essence — an inner beauty that only reveals itself, through a dour exterior, to the loving and believing gaze.

There’s no Comprehending Russia
With the Mind

There’s no comprehending Russia with the mind,
No measuring it with a common yardstick —
It has its own peculiar nature —
Russian can only be attained through faith.

These Poor Villages

These poor villages,
This spare nature —
Native land of enduring patience,
O land of the Russian people!

Never will it understand, or even notice —
That haughty foreign gaze —
