The Admiralty

In the northern capital a dusty poplar languishes,
A transparent clock-face entangled in the leaves,
And in that somber green — a frigate — or acropolis —
Shines from a distance, brother to water and sky.

A ship of air, its mast a yellow touch-me-not,
It serves as measuring-stick for Peter’s successors;
It teaches: beauty is not the whim of a demigod,
But the voracious, experienced eye of a simple joiner.

To us was granted dominion over four elements;
But the free human being has created a fifth.
Is not the supremacy of space itself refuted
By this chastely constructed Ark?

Capricious Medusas, angrily set in sculpture;
Anchors rusting, like abandoned plows.
Here are the binds of three dimensions broken,
And universal seas spread far and wide!

Адмиралтейство

В столице северной томится пыльный тополь.
Запутался в листве прозрачный циферблат,
И в тёмной зелени фрегат или акрополь
Сияет издали, воде и небу брат.

Ладья воздушная и мачта недотрога,
Служа линейкою преемникам Петра,
Он учит: красота не прихоть полубога,
А хищный глазомер простого столяра.

Нам четырёх стихий приязненно господство;
Но создал пятую свободный человек.
Не отрицает ли пространства превосходство
Сей целомудренно-построенный ковчег?

Сердито лепятся капризные Медузы,
Как плуги брошены, ржавеют якоря,
И вот разорваны трёх измерений узы
И открываются всемирные моря!
