Pushkin: Siberian Mines

This well-known poem is addressed to those exiled to каторга (convict labor) in Siberia following the Decembrist revolt (just as Dostoevsky would be some years later). Note the many future-tense perfective verbs: Pushkin is giving a hopeful prophecy! Indeed, he sent this poem to the prisoners there, and even received a poem in response.

In the Depths of the Siberian Mines

In the depths of the Siberian mines,
Preserve your proud endurance;
Your mournful labor will not be in vain,
Nor the lofty strivings of your thoughts.

Faithful sister of misfortune,
Hope, in that somber subterranean realm,
Will stir your spirits and awaken joy;
That longed-for time will come:

Love and friendship will reach you,
Pressing through these gloomy prison bolts,
Just as, in your burrows of captivity,
My free voice now reaches your ears.

Your heavy fetters will fall,
The dungeons will dissolve — and freedom
Will greet you joyously at her gate,
And your brothers bare their swords in tribute.
