But be that as it may

The street had collapsed, like the nose of a syphilitic.
The river was voluptuousness secreted in saliva.
Having thrown off their undergarments down to the very last petal,
The gardens sprawled obscenely in June.

I stepped out onto the square;
The burned-out city block
I donned on my head like a wig of red hair.
People are terrified — from out of my mouth
An incompletely chewed shout wiggles its legs.

But they won’t condemn me, they won’t bark at me;
As for a prophet, they’ll bestrew my path with flowers.
All of these — the ones with the collapsed noses — know:
I am your poet.

Your Last Judgment frightens me, like a seedy tavern!
Me alone, through the burning buildings,
The prostitutes will bear in their arms, like a holy relic,
And show to god as their justification.

And god will weep over my little book!
Not words — but convulsions, coagulated in a lump;
And he’ll run off through the sky with my poems tucked under his arm
And, breathless, read them to his acquaintances.

А всё-таки

Улица провалилась, как нос сифилитика.
Река — сладострастье, растёкшееся в слюни.
Отбросив бельё до последнего листика,
сады похабно развалились в июне.

Я вышел на площадь,
выжженный квартал
надел на голову, как рыжий парик.
Людям страшно — у меня изо рта
шевелит ногами непрожёванный крик.

Но меня не осудят, меня не облают,
как пророку, цветами устелят мне след.
Все эти, провалившиеся носами, знают:
я — ваш поэт.

Как трактир, мне страшен ваш страшный суд!
Меня одного сквозь горящие здания
проститутки, как святыню, на руках понесут
и покажут богу в своë оправдание.

И бог заплачет над моею книжкой!
Не слова — судороги, слипшиеся комом;
и побежит по небу с моими стихами под мышкой
и будет, задыхаясь, читать их своим знакомым.
