Listen Up!

Listen up!
I mean, if they’re lighting the stars,
Does that mean that someone still needs them?
That someone wants them to be there?
That someone calls these spit-wads pearls?
And, slaving away
In the windstorms of mid-day dust,
He burst in to see god,
Afraid he’s come too late,
Weeps,
Kisses his sinewy hand,
Asks —
That there must absolutely be a star!
Swears —
He won’t endure this starless torment!
And later
He walks around anxious,
But calm on the outside.
He says to someone:
”Hey, now you’re OK, right?
It’s not scary?
Right?!”
Listen up!
I mean, if they’re lighting the stars,
Does that mean that someone still needs them?
Does that mean… it’s necessary,
That every evening,
Above the rooftops,
At least one star light up?!

Послушайте!  
Ведь, если звёзды зажигают —
Значит, это кому-нибудь нужно?
Значит, кто-то хочет, чтобы они были?
Значит, кто-то называет эти плевочки жемчужиной?
И, надрываясь
в метелях полуденной пыли,
врывается к богу,
боится, что опоздал,
плачет,
целует ему жилистую руку,
просит —
чтоб обязательно была звезда!
клянётся —
не перенесёт эту беззвёздную муку!
А после
ходит тревожный,
но спокойный наружно.
Говорит кому-то:
«Ведь теперь тебе ничего?
Не страшно?
Да?!»
Послушайте!
Ведь, если звёзды зажигают,
значит — это кому-нибудь нужно? 
Значит — это необходимо,
чтоб каждый вечер
над крышами
загоралась хоть одна звезда?!
