Scriabin’s Sonatas

Several Russian composers are practically household names — Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov, Prokofiev, Stravinsky. Anyone with any interest in Russian music has surely heard of others — Mussorgsky, Shostakovich, Borodin. One composer seems, to me at least, to be far less known, and less appreciated — certainly not to the extent he deserves. If you haven’t heard of Alexander Scriabin (Скрябин), here’s your chance to get acquainted.

My favorite works of his are his sonatas — indeed, they’re some of my all-time favorite works for piano. Sample a few below… followed by a bonus selection!

Piano Sonata No. 1

Piano Sonata No. 2

Piano Sonata No. 3 (movements posted separately)

Piano Sonata No. 5

Bonus: Étude No. 12, played by Vladimir Horowitz
