A Prayer

Christ my God! I thirst for a miracle —
Now, this minute, at the day’s beginning!
O, let me die, while
All of life is like a book for me.

You are wise; You will not sternly say:
”Be patient, your time has not yet passed.”
You yourself have given me — too much!
I thirst, at once, for — every road!

I want it all: with a gypsy’s soul
To be bound for plunder, singing songs;
To suffer for mankind to the sound of an organ,
To race into battle like an Amazon;

To read omens in the stars, in a dark tower;
To lead children onward through the shadow…
I wish that yesterday might be a legend,
That every day might be — madness!

I love the cross, the silk, the helmets;
My soul is but a trail of moments…
You’ve given me a childhood better than a fairy tale;
So, let me die — aged seventeen!

Христос и Бог! Я жажду чуда
Теперь, сейчас, в начале дня!
О, дай мне умереть, покуда
Вся жизнь как книга для меня.

Ты мудрый, Ты не скажешь строго:
— “Терпи, ещё не кончен срок”.
Ты сам мне подал — слишком много!
Я жажду сразу — всех дорог!

Всего хочу: с душой цыгана
Идти под песни на разбой,
За всех страдать под звук органа
и амазонкой мчаться в бой;

Гадать по звёздам в чёрной башне,
Вести детей вперёд, сквозь тень...
Чтоб был легендой — день вчерашний,
Чтоб был безумьем — каждый день!

Люблю и крест, и шёлк, и каски,
Моя душа мгновений след...
Ты дал мне детство — лучше сказки
И дай мне смерть — в семнадцать лет!
