A Dream

In midday heat, in a valley of Dagestan,
With lead in my breast, I lay motionless;
The deep wound was still smoking,
Drop by drop my blood was being spent.

Alone I lay on the sand of the valley.
Mountain ledges crowded in around me;
And the sun scorched their yellow summits,
And scorched me, but I slept the sleep of the dead.

And I dreamed of, shining with lights (flames),
An evening feast, in my native land;
Among the young maidens, crowned in flowers,
There ran a happy conversation about me.

But, in this happy conversation taking no part,
There sat one girl, alone, contemplative.
And into a somber dream her young soul
Was plunged, God knows by what.

And she dreamed of a valley of Dagestan;
A familiar corpse lay in that valley;
In its breast, a smoking wound shone black,
And its blood poured forth in an ever-colder stream.

В полдневный жар в долине Дагестана
С свинцом в груди лежал недвижим я;
Глубокая ещё дымилась рана,
По капле кровь точилася моя.

Лежал один я на песке долины;
Уступы скал теснилися кругом,
И солнце жгло их жёлтые вершины
И жгло меня — но спал я мёртвым сном.

И снился мне сияющий огнями
Вечерний пир в родимой стороне.
Меж юных жëн, увенчанных цветами,
Шёл разговор весёлый обо мне.

Но, в разговор весёлый не вступая,
Сидела там задумчиво одна,
И в грустный сон душа её младая
Бог знает чем была погружена;

И снилась ей долина Дагестана;
Знакомый труп лежал в долине той;
В его груди, дымясь, чернела рана,
И кровь лилась хладеющей струёй.
