The Poor Knight

There once lived a poor knight,
Taciturn and unassuming,
Somber and pale in countenance,
Bold and forthright in spirit.

He once had a vision
Unfathomable to the mind,
And profound was the impression
It cut into his heart.

Traveling to Geneva,
At the roadside, near a cross,
He saw the Virgin Mary,
The Mother of Christ our Lord.

From that time forth, his soul consumed by fire,
He refused to look upon women,
And with no woman, unto the very grave,
Did he deign to speak a word.

From that time forth, his helm’s steel visor
He did not raise from his face,
And about his neck, a rosary
He tied, in place of a scarf.

Prayers to the Father, the Son,
Or the Holy Spirit never
Did the paladin pray.
A strange man was he.

He would spend entire nights
Before the face of the Blessed Mary,
His sorrowful eyes fixed upon Her,
Quietly pouring a river of tears.

Full of faith and love,
True to his pious dream,
”Ave, Mater Dei” (Hail the Mother of God), in blood,
He wrote upon his shield.

When the other paladins
Rode out to meet their trembling foes,
Across the plains of Palestine,
Racing, calling out the names of their fair maidens,

“Lumen coelum, sancta Rosa! (Light of heaven, holy rose!)”
He would exclaim, louder than all,
And his menacing presence scattered
The Saracens in all directions.

Having returned to his distant castle,
He lived in strict confinement,
Ever enamored, ever sorrowful,
He died without communion.

And as he lay dying
A clever spirit neared his bed;
The knight’s soul, most certainly,
The demon would drag off into his realm:

After all, “He didn’t pray to God.”
After all, “He didn’t keep the fast.”
After all, “With what untoward zeal
He courted the Mother of Christ.”

But the Virgin, tender-heartedly,
Did intercede in his defense,
And welcomed, into the Eternal Kingdom,
Her paladin.

Странный был он человек.

Проводил он целы ночи
Перед ликом Пресвятой,
Устремив к Ней скорбны очи,
Тихо слёзы лья рекой.

Полон верой и любовью,
Верен набожной мечте,
Ave, Mater Dei кровью
Написал он на щите.

Между тем как паладины
Ввстречу трепетным врагам
По равнинам Палестины
Мчались, именуя дам,

Восклицал всех громче он,
И гнала его угроза
Мусульман со всех сторон.

Возвратясь в свой замок дальний,
Жил он строго заключён,
Всё влюблённый, всё печальный,
Без причастья умер он;

Между тем как он кончался,

Душу рыцаря сбирался
Бес тащить уж в свой предел:

Он-де Богу не молился,
Он не ведал-де поста,
Не путём-де волочился
Он за Матушкой Христа.

Но Пречистая сердечно
Заступилась за него
И впустила в царство вечно
Паладина Своего.
